Groundwater Remediation of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis Membranes—A Field Study

چکیده
Groundwater contamination by chlorinated hydrocarbons represents a particularly difficult separation to achieve and very little is published on the subject. In this paper, we explore potential for removal of volatile non-volatile organics from site in Bedfordshire UK. The compounds interest include trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (DCE), 2,2-dichloropropane (DCP) vinyl chloride (VC). separations were first tested laboratory. Microfiltration membranes no use separation. Nanofiltration performed well rejections 70–93% observed synthetic solutions up 100% real groundwater samples. Site trials limited space power availability, which resulted maximum operating pressure only 3 bar. Under these conditions, nanofiltration membrane removed organic materials, but failed remove VOCs any significant extent. Initial results with reverse osmosis positive, 93% VOCs. However, subsequent samples taken demonstrated removal. Several hypotheses presented explain behavior most likely cause issue was fouling leading adsorption onto allowing passage through matrix.

Removal of assimilable organic carbon and biodegradable dissolved organic carbon by reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes
The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF), under various solution chemistries, on bacterial regrowth potential as quantified by assimilable organic carbon (AOC) and biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC). The bench-scale experiments, using tap groundwater spiked with acetate as organic carbon, revealed that AOC remo...
متن کاملEvaluation of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration for in situ persulfate remediated groundwater
Sodium persulfate is a common oxidant used for in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) remediation of ground water contaminants (e.g., trichloroethylene (TCE)). Following ISCO unused persulfate and oxidation by-products such as sulfates remain within the groundwater at elevated levels. In this laboratory study the performance of three membranes: one nanofiltration (NF) membrane (designated DK) and tw...
متن کاملReverse osmosis processing of organic model compounds and fermentation broths.
Post-treatment of an anaerobic fermentation broth was evaluated using a 150 gal/day, single cartridge prototype reverse osmosis (RO) system. Baseline tests were conducted at 25 degrees C using six organic model compounds representing key species found in the fermentation broth: ethanol, butanol, acetic acid, oxalic acid, lactic acid, and butyric acid. Correlations of the rejection and recovery ...
